first mass-produced main battle tank equipped with a smoothbore main gun
• Its 115mm gun was designed to fire high-velocity armour-piercing ammunition against heavily armoured targets
• Also equipped with a 7.62mm PKT coaxial machine gun for engaging infantry and lightly protected targets
• The original vehicle featured a four-man crew, consisting substantial frontal protection for its era
• The original tank incorporated an automatic spent-cartridge ejection system, helping remove fired cartridge cases from the fighting compartment
• Designed for armoured breakthroughs, direct-fire support and engagements against enemy tanks
• The T-62 entered service with the Soviet Army and became an important component of Warsaw Pact armoured forces
• Widely exported to Soviet-aligned countries and operated by numerous military forces around the world
• T-62 tanks participated in several major conflicts, including the Arab-Israeli wars, Soviet-Afghan War and Iran-Iraq War
• The T-62 family remained in service for decades, with numerous modernisation programmes extending its operational life
• The early T-62 configuration represents an important transitional stage between the T-55 and later T-64 and T-72 main battle
